Why I Swapped Syrup for Olive Oil in My Oatmeal

Oatmeal has always been one of my go-to weekday breakfasts, and I’m constantly experimenting with ways to make it healthier without sacrificing taste. I usually start with rolled oats simmered in milk for extra protein and creaminess. Then I’ll add a spoonful of peanut butter for more healthy fats and a handful of berries or chopped figs for antioxidants and a touch of natural sweetness.

For years, I would finish the bowl with a drizzle of maple syrup. It gave that extra sweetness and loosened up the oats just enough. But one morning, my bottle of extra virgin olive oil caught my eye on the counter. On a whim, I set aside the syrup and poured a small spoonful of EVOO over my oatmeal, adding a pinch of flaky salt. From that day forward, I never looked back.

The Surprising Health Benefits of Olive Oil

The taste alone was enough to win me over, but I also suspected EVOO made my breakfast significantly healthier. To confirm, I spoke with Annie Fenn, MD, author of The Brain Health Kitchen.

According to Dr. Fenn, extra virgin olive oil is a powerhouse of health benefits. Its monounsaturated fats and antioxidant-rich polyphenols fight inflammation, reduce LDL cholesterol, improve circulation, and can even help lower blood pressure. Even more impressively, research suggests EVOO may improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

By using EVOO, I was also cutting back on added sugar. Unlike maple syrup, which is primarily sugar, olive oil slows digestion, keeps blood sugar stable, and improves the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients from toppings like nuts and berries. The result? A more balanced and nourishing meal that leaves you satisfied for longer.

Does Just a Teaspoon Really Make a Difference?

At first, I wondered if swapping a teaspoon of syrup for the same amount of olive oil could really matter. According to Dr. Fenn, it absolutely does.

She pointed to a recent Harvard study showing that people who consumed just two teaspoons of EVOO daily had significantly lower risks of major diseases: 19% lower risk of heart disease, 17% lower risk of cancer, and nearly 30% lower risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Small swaps can add up to powerful long-term benefits, especially if you’re replacing butter or sugar-laden toppings with olive oil.

Have you ever encountered someone who eats healthily, runs five miles daily, meditates like a pro, yet still appears and feels terrible? That was me.

I made every effort to do things correctly. Waking up early. Eating clean. Working out every day. Monitoring my steps. Keeping track of my sleep. Logging my meals. I mixed spinach with coconut water as if it were sacred.

I was trapped in a routine that seemed healthy from the outside. But on the inside? I was drained. Experiencing body pains. Feeling anxious. My body felt off-kilter. My mind felt sluggish. And I couldn’t understand why.

The reality struck me hard: I wasn’t unhealthy despite all those habits. I was unhealthy because of them. Not every single one. But much of what I believed was “healthy” was merely stress in disguise.

It gave me a sense of productivity and control. Yet, it gradually damaged my system. Because I never questioned it. I simply adhered to the script.

Here are 8 so-called “healthy” habits that subtly undermine your body while making you believe you’re doing everything right.

Overhydrating Like It’s a Religion

One habit often celebrated as ‘healthy’ can actually be detrimental to your health: overhydration—consuming excessive amounts of water.

You’ve likely noticed people carrying around large gallon jugs, meticulously monitoring their water intake as if it’s a moral victory. ‘Stay hydrated,’ they proclaim. However, there comes a time when this practice shifts from beneficial to harmful.

While our bodies do require water, they also need essential electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride to operate effectively.

When you consume too much water too rapidly, you risk diluting these vital minerals. This can result in a condition known as hyponatremia, where your blood sodium levels plummet to dangerously low levels.

Any form of movement is advantageous, but with the growing trend of tuning into our bodies, many individuals are opting for low-impact workouts to enhance longevity and support healthy aging.

From Pilates and leisurely walks to mat sculpt sessions, weighted vests, and functional strength training, these forms of “low-impact exercise” have gained significant traction in recent years. We consulted with experts to find out the best low-impact workouts you can engage in—whether at home, in a gym, or in a class. Here’s their advice.

What Is Low-Impact Exercise?

Low-impact exercise is a type of movement that is gentle on your body and joints while still increasing your heart rate and enhancing strength, stability, and endurance. It enables you to maintain consistency without overexerting yourself—and still provides visible results.

“We don’t always need to push ourselves to the limit to feel strong—I’ve discovered that sometimes, taking it slow is where true transformation occurs,” shares Karena Dawn, co-founder of Tone It Up. “Low-impact movement allows you to develop strength and confidence without experiencing burnout.”

Due to its slower and more deliberate approach, low-impact movement can actually be more demanding and necessitate greater control and a mind-muscle connection—making it a workout for both your body and mind.

What Are the Best Types of Low-Impact Exercise?

Pilates
Created by Joseph Pilates, this movement method has gained immense popularity in recent years—partly due to its presence on our social media feeds. Whether you’re practicing on a reformer, on a mat, at home, or adding small Pilates modifications to your daily routine, this low-impact workout enhances core strength, posture, and flexibility.

Walking
Indeed, it can be as simple as taking a stroll around the block after a meal. Getting in those steps not only provides mental clarity throughout the day, but it also serves as a form of cardio that you can do at your own pace and timing.

Yoga
Yoga combines exercise with a meditative approach through movement. Its advantages extend far beyond just relaxation. It allows your body to improve its flexibility and core strength. Whether you incorporate a few poses into your workout or engage in a 75-minute vinyasa flow, this type of low-impact exercise will yield results both internally and externally.
